APPLICATIONS OF SANSERU, SEIPAI AND KURURUNFA
The applications of the kata are the keys to its mastery, and ultimately, the mastery of karate itself. Without an understanding of the bunkai, the kata movements can seem unrelated, ineffective, even bizarre.
However, when the novice is shown how an awkward downward strike works as a takedown; that an apparently insignificant movement is a debilitating pressure point attack; and what appears to be a kick is actually a block, he gains new insight into, and respect for this fundamental element of traditional karate training.
