About the Author:
Hideyuki Ashihara (芦原 英幸, December 5, 1944 – April 24, 1995) was a renowned Japanese martial artist and the founder of Ashihara Karate, a practical and dynamic style emphasizing strategy, circular movement, and real-world application. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Ashihara began his martial arts journey with judo before transitioning to karate. He trained under Masutatsu Oyama in Kyokushin Karate, becoming one of its top practitioners.
In 1980, Ashihara founded his own system, Ashihara Kaikan, focusing on logical techniques, adaptability, and his innovative concept of sabaki—efficiently avoiding an opponent's attack while creating counteroffensive opportunities. Known as the “Sabaki no Ashihara,” his legacy endures through his books, teaching materials, and the Ashihara Karate organization, which continues to spread his philosophy worldwide.
Ashihara passed away in 1995 due to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), leaving behind a profound impact on the martial arts world.
