Mikami Sadanao: Devoted Swordsmith of the Sōden Bizen Tradition

Mikami Sadanao is a dedicated swordsmith specializing in the Sōden Bizen tradition, continuing the legacy of sword forging handed down through generations since the Edo period.

The art of Japanese swordsmithing encompasses various styles distinguished by era and region. Among these, the "Goka Den," colloquially known as the five traditions, include the Yamato, Yamashiro, Bizen, Sōshū, and Mino traditions. The Bizen tradition, originating primarily in what is now Okayama Prefecture, flourished under numerous master swordsmiths, evolving over time to encompass diverse artistic styles. One notable evolution was the emergence of the "Sōden Bizen" during the Nanboku-chō period.

Combining the elegance of traditional Bizen techniques with the influence of the popular Sōshū tradition that arose in the late Kamakura period, Sōden Bizen became a significant trend embraced by many swordsmiths. Mikami Sadanao was captivated by this style and has devoted himself exclusively to crafting swords in the Sōden Bizen tradition in the town of Kitahiroshima.

This DVD showcases Mikami's admiration for the rigorous forging techniques of Sōden Bizen and presents his exemplary works.

  • Mikami Sadanao
Born in 1955 in Ohnan, Shimane Prefecture. Mikami pursued his ambition to become a swordsmith after graduating from high school, apprenticing under Living National Treasure, the 2nd generation Tsukiyama Sadaichi. After honing his skills at the Tsukiyama dojo, he established a forging workshop in Kitahiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, adopting the name "Sadanao" as his professional title. He was profoundly influenced by the works of master swordsmith Nagasune Nagayoshi in the Sōden Bizen tradition, which guided his path forward. Since then, Mikami has dedicated himself to crafting swords in the Sōden Bizen style, eschewing contemporary trends in favor of creating robust, large-scale blades reminiscent of those from the Nanboku-chō period. Mikami has garnered strong support from enthusiasts who admire the strength and durability of traditional Japanese swords. His accolades include winning the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the Omamori Sword Exhibition, starting with his selection in the 18th New Sword Exhibition. He also served as the 7th President of the All Japan Swordsmiths Association and is designated an Intangible Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture.
